LightSide Vs. DarkSide – PowderPuff 22′
This year’s homecoming week featured one of our most favorite activities, the annual Powder Puff game. We had a face off between the DarkSide (Seniors) and the LightSide (Juniors). Before the game the stakes were high with a competitive group of coaches on either side of the field and an even higher competition with the Senior and Junior girls.
In preparation for the big kick off, LightSide’s (Juniors) head coach, Casey Crofts had much confidence in his team and especially their offense. When asked what the weaknesses of the team were he said “ No weaknesses, not at all…no. No ”. “What scares me is them cheaten us, makin us not win”.
Another Coach of LightSide (Juniors), Will Dekorver, when asked what their biggest strength of the team had, he was extremely confident in their Wide Receiver “ We have a 6 ‘4 Wide Receiver [Kallie Jones]” he said with much pride. Kallie Jones of the Lightside (Juniors) had much power. She was a dominant offensive player during the game and had many carrys of the ball throughout the game. When asked what Kallies favorite part of the game was she replied by saying “My favorite part of the game was playing offense and getting some good catches from Aspen”.
On the other side of the field the Senior girls of the DarkSide were ready to fight. Coming out from under the bleachers and ending with a mosh pit full of excitement. They were ready for their very last Powder Puff game.
DarkSides (Seniors) head coach Nik Tolbert felt good with his team’s work ethic throughout the past weeks “I feel really good, we put in a lot of work”.
Another coach Kolton Kirby had a lot to say about one of the Seniors Star players Andie Andrus, “ We got Andie Andrus back there, she’s a speed demon”. Andrus was extremely quick running the ball play after play helping to get her team to the endzone.
Each team sent out their 4 team captains to initiate the coin toss for the kickoff. The Seniors chose to receive the ball, putting them on offense for the start of the game. The stakes were high with winning on each team’s minds. There was much excitement throughout the field, the coaches, refs, family, and the student section. Kickoff began with ease for the Senior girls and the play began with fun.
The first half of the game had many eventful plays. Andie Andrus during a defensive play against the Juniors went for an interception. Andie caught the ball and weaved her way to the endzone. “Before the game Nik told me that if I got the ball to just run into the endzone, so when I caught the ball I ran to the endzone” Andrus said. However it was eventually called back because of an offensive penalty.
Throughout the middle of the first half of the game the Senior team made the mistake of doing the same play over and over again. A Senior coach, Jud Wells, said “I was a little nervous because the Juniors were able to hold us” After a few plays, the Junior coaches eventually got the gist and were able to keep up with the other team… however it wasn’t for long.
An eventful first half brought an even more eventful 2nd half. The 2nd half began with more clarity with the girls from each side with their heads in the game.
During the middle of the 2nd half Kate Sluder snapped the ball to one of the Seniors quarterbacks, Zoey Guymon, Zoey ran the ball to the endzone during an offensive play. “That was so exhilarating, I pounded through everybody, I ended up falling on the ground with the ball in my hands in the endzone, I got up and everyone was cheering”, Guymon said with a smile.
A coach from the DarkSide, Trevis Leiser was extremely excited with the outcome of that play, “I had nothing but faith knowing she could get it done because what can I say she is well coached… sent her in there knowing she’s a play maker and players make plays”.
During the 2nd half we even had Junior coach, Thatcher Phelps come in with a wig to fool the Seniors and further help to get his team to the end zone. But he was soon trampled by the Darkside. When asked what Phelps thought of this move he replied with “I was upset because I believe if I was playing the whole game the outcome would’ve been different”. The crowd laughed at this move and the game carried on.
The time on the clock began to run out and the scoreboard read a 6-0 end result. The Seniors rushed the field with excitement and pride because of their win.
Coach of the , Jud Wells was extremely proud of his team and when asked what he thought of this result his response was “I was really happy that the Seniors were able to pull through and win”.
